Hong Kong's harbor developed into a successful and genuine international port under British administration. Hong Kong, which was ceded to Britain after the Opium War, became the Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on July 1st, 1997. Hong Kong's natural resources are confined and so is the arable land. Consequently, most of the food and raw materials have to be imported. Hong Kong's main trade partners are China, US, Japan, Germany, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.
